The joy of Christmas was spread by word and song on December 14 when the Hope Carolers visited Atlantic Shores Seaside Rehabilitation Center.  Barbara and Wolfgang Bosse, who reside at Atlantic Shores, and Lois Moser, who is undergoing rehab at the Seaside Center enjoyed the Christmas carolers.

Seaside has many elderly people recovering from strokes. It was amazing to watch them mouth the words proclaiming the birth of Christ. Many commented about how they all appreciated the singing.

The carolers also went to Harbourway Assisted Living where they received rave reviews. It is so easy to bring joy to people through the birth of Christ. Thanks to all who made this caroling event happen.

Beginning Nov. 10 you may order Christmas Poinsettias. Look for the sign-up forms, envelopes and drop box on the tall table in the Narthex. Poinsettias are $15 each, checks payable to Hope Lutheran Church. Payment is requested at the time of your order. All proceeds will help with altar needs. The poinsettias will be displayed in the chancel area Dec. 15 through Christmas Day. They may be picked up after the 10am service Christmas Day. The last day to purchase poinsettias will be Sunday, Dec. 8.

You may now place your 2014 Altar Flowers and Eternal Flame orders. Use the white 8½ x 11 sign-up sheet on the tall table below the flower chart, located in the Narthex.  Do not write directly on the flower chart. Once your order is placed, your name will be printed and placed on the chart.  You may also place orders by calling the church office (424-4848) or sending an e-mail to assist@Hope.hrcoxmail.com.   A check for $40 payable to Hope Lutheran Church (or cash) is needed to place your order.  Altar flowers may be taken home after the late service or picked up during the week.

Proceeds from 2013 helped to provide the beautiful green altar paraments, the red banner for Pentecost and Reformation, some of the crimson Christmas decorations and a set of communion linens.  Thank you.

Hope will give a special dramatic musical presentation, “For Such A One As This” on Good Friday 2014. The musical is by Mark Hayes and the cast includes 8 characters: Judas, Peter, Pontius Pilate, Simon of Cyrene, Mary, the Two Thieves, and Mary Magdalene. The musical also features an adult choir, a children’s choir (2nd-8th graders), and a small instrumental ensemble.

I hope to have several new singers in both the adult and children’s choruses. Some of  the other volunteers needed are several male actors (speaking parts only), all voice parts for the adult choir, children singers (2nd-8th graders), instrumentalists and a crew to help with sound, lighting, sets and costumes. If you would like to get involved and share your talents in one of those areas please contact me at Meredith.Mulcair@gmail.com.  Rehearsals start in late January 2014.

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War, then known as “the Great War.” Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning the following year, November 11th became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars. The brave men and women who serve and protect the U.S. come from all walks of life; they are parents, children and grandparents. They are friends, neighbors and coworkers, and an important part of their communities. (more…)
