German Advent and Christmas Traditions

Saturday, December 7, 2 to 4pm

Advent season is the time to prepare for the Coming of Christ. Let’s quiet down during this busy time of the year, reflect upon what we are celebrating and get ready for His arrival. Please come and join us for Christmas cookies, tea sandwiches, coffee, tea and fellowship. In addition to singing Christmas songs, we will learn about how the season is celebrated in Germany. So invite a friend and bring your favorite cookies to share for a wonderful afternoon. All ladies 10 years and older are welcome. There is a $5 fee for each attendee. Look for the sign-up sheet in the narthex. Registration deadline is Dec. 1. For questions, please contact Britta Rinehard.

Beginning Nov. 10 you may order Christmas Poinsettias. Look for the sign-up forms, envelopes and drop box on the tall table in the Narthex. Poinsettias are $15 each, checks payable to Hope Lutheran Church. Payment is requested at the time of your order. All proceeds will help with altar needs. The poinsettias will be displayed in the chancel area Dec. 15 through Christmas Day. They may be picked up after the 10am service Christmas Day. The last day to purchase poinsettias will be Sunday, Dec. 8.

You may now place your 2014 Altar Flowers and Eternal Flame orders. Use the white 8½ x 11 sign-up sheet on the tall table below the flower chart, located in the Narthex.  Do not write directly on the flower chart. Once your order is placed, your name will be printed and placed on the chart.  You may also place orders by calling the church office (424-4848) or sending an e-mail to   A check for $40 payable to Hope Lutheran Church (or cash) is needed to place your order.  Altar flowers may be taken home after the late service or picked up during the week.

Proceeds from 2013 helped to provide the beautiful green altar paraments, the red banner for Pentecost and Reformation, some of the crimson Christmas decorations and a set of communion linens.  Thank you.

Thanks to all of you we provided a home for the Diaz family in Honduras. God’s gifts are stupendous. By the grace of God, can we take it to another level and provide a water pump and have someone drill and install a well for a Village?

Before summer came, we had collected $232 toward this project. This means we have enough for the water pump which is $205 and $27 left toward the well which costs $5,298.  We only need to raise $5,271.

I am sure in the near future we will have an offering for this project.  If you feel a need to make a donation before then or at any time – just put your check in an envelope marked “Food For The Poor-Well”. Your donation for this lifesaving equipment is invaluable and will improve the life and health of an entire Village. I cannot THANK YOU enough.

Editor’s Note: The offering from our Thanksgiving Eve service will be given to Food for the Poor for a well.
